In Organizer, your outreach efforts must adhere to national, state, and local privacy laws and regulations that are intended to protect consumers from unwanted contact. You must also adhere to our Community Standards and Terms of Use. By doing so, you will not only avoid penalties, but your outreach will be more cost effective and impactful when you target familiar audiences who are interested in hearing from your organization or campaign.
In Organizer, there are several ways to identify Communities who are interested in hearing from you. For example:
- Gather opt-in information ahead of sending any outreach messaging. This will confirm whether the audience wants to receive messaging from you.
- Honor opt-out requests to avoid spamming audiences who have already told you that they don’t want to receive your message.
- Utilize Model Scores when you build Communities. This will help you identify audiences that are likely to be receptive to your messages.
- Update the usability and accuracy of contact methods throughout your outreach efforts to maintain current information on whether and how the audience wants to receive your message.
From a compliance perspective, the differences between "opting in" and "opting out" are very important. Put simply, the differences are as follows:
-
"Opting in" means that an individual explicitly gives consent or permission before any data collection, processing, or communication takes place. Many privacy laws and regulations mandate an opt-in approach in order to preserve the rights of individuals to control their data and privacy. Examples:
- An individual must check a box or fill out a form to receive emails.
- Consent is required before collecting personal data.
-
"Opting out" refers to a process where data collection or communication occurs by default, but individuals have the ability to decline or withdraw consent after the fact. While permissible in certain regions or under specific regulations, the opt-out approach is increasingly being scrutinized due to privacy concerns. Examples:
- An organization sends emails to individuals unless they specifically unsubscribe.
- Data collection or tracking is active unless the individual disables cookies or privacy settings.
