Householding is the process of grouping individuals based on a specific contact type - usually a physical address - so that campaign efforts can reach a collective household rather than each individual resident.
Householding can be an effective strategy in preventing duplicate outreach to the same address, or ensuring you reach the right people.
In Organizer, we enable householding by physical address, email address, and phone number, in one of two ways:
- Export - Grouping in Export allows users to group profiles by a shared contact method, Phone, Email, or Address, so they can easily see which profiles belong together. For example, grouping by Address helps users identify all individuals at the same residence, which is especially useful when preparing personalized mailers like “The Smith Family” or “Jane Doe & Bob Smith.”
- Community Consolidation - Consolidate communities from Community Builder, or from a given list or segment, such that your final list only includes one profile per contact data point. This method is useful when targeting only one individual per defined household.
Let’s look at each one more closely.
Export - Group your data based on attributes when you export.
- Go to My Universe > Export and click Create Export. This will open the Create Export page.
- Name the export in the Export Name field. Tip: This will become the file name of the resulting CSV, so make sure to give it a clear and explanatory name that will be useful in the future. Optionally, you can add a description to the export.
- Choose Profile Data, then click Next.
- Select the Community you would like to export. Under Group Profiles, select which contact attribute you’d like to group on (Physical Address, Email, Phone Number), and click Next
- Select which attributes you would like to include in your export. Each attribute will become a column of the CSV file. You can use the Search for Attributes field to find an attribute by its name or category. Your selected contact attribute from Step 4 will be automatically selected.
- Click Create Export to generate the export.

- Save List
From a List
- Go to Communities > Lists
- Select a list to consolidate. Tip: Filter out already-consolidated lists by selecting ‘Regular Lists’ from the filter in List Details
- In the Actions Menu, select Save as Consolidated List.
- Follow step 4 onwards from consolidating lists from Community Builder
From a Segment
- Go to Communities > Segments
- Select a segment to consolidate.
- In the Actions Menu, select Save as Consolidated List.
- Follow step 4 onwards from consolidating lists from Community Builder
Note that consolidated communities can only be saved as lists, and a consolidated list can be consolidated again on a new filter, if desired. Consolidated Lists will not be available in the Add to List dropdown in Single Profile View, meaning that individual profiles cannot be added in an ad-hoc manner to consolidated lists. When viewing a consolidated list, consolidation filters will be shown to you, so you can validate how the community was consolidated. Consolidated Lists currently cannot be duplicated.
